Role Objective
Serve as the technical and architectural authority for database platforms across multiple customers and environments, leading solution design (HA/DR, scaling, security), large-scale cost optimization programs, and acting as the escalation point for critical incidents.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience (5+ years preferred in enterprise or regulated environments).
- Expert in at least one engine (PostgreSQL or MySQL) with strong capability in the other; solid understanding of multi-engine trade-offs.
- Proven experience handling production-scale environments (HA/DR, multi-customer setups, major incidents, complex migrations).
- Strong in observability and reliability patterns (SLOs, error budgets, capacity modeling).
- Able to clearly explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders (management/customers).
Key Responsibilities
- Design database architectures for mission-critical workloads: HA, DR (multi-region when required), scaling, partitioning strategies, connection pooling, and caching approaches.
- Lead large-scale cost optimization programs: governance, standard sizing, storage/IOPS evaluation, replica strategies, backup cost optimization, licensing, and recommendations for the most cost-efficient platforms.
- Lead complex performance optimization initiatives: query rewrites, enterprise-grade indexing strategies, advanced tuning, contention/locking analysis, vacuum/analyze strategies (PostgreSQL), buffer/Innodb tuning (MySQL).
- Lead major upgrades/rolling upgrades and define version compatibility strategies with minimal downtime.
- Define and enforce security standards: encryption, key management, auditing, and customer compliance requirements (fintech/regulatory, etc.).
- Act as technical lead for large/complex migrations (multi-TB, near-zero downtime), including well-planned cutover and rollback strategies.
- Serve as the Sev-1 escalation point, lead war rooms, conduct deep RCAs, and drive permanent fixes.
- Mentor junior and mid-level DBAs through coaching, design reviews, knowledge sharing, and operational maturity improvements.
- Collaborate with Cloud Architects/DevOps to standardize platforms: DB landing zones, blueprints, and automation.
- Participate in pre-sales/solutioning activities (optional depending on vendor): effort estimation, risk assessment, and high-level design.
