Role Overview
Footwear & Bag Designer is a creative professional responsible for the conceptualization, design, and development of shoes and bags for a brand or company. It&aposs a dynamic role blending artistic vision with technical knowledge and market awareness.
What Youll Do:
Concept & Trend Research:
- Conduct in-depth research on global fashion trends, consumer preferences, market demands, and competitor analysis specifically for footwear and bags.
- Identify emerging materials, colors, textures, hardware, and silhouettes.
- Develop seasonal themes, mood boards, color palettes, and conceptual directions aligned with the brand&aposs identity and business goals.
Sketching & Design:
- Create original, innovative, and brand-appropriate sketches (both hand-drawn and digital) for shoe and bag collections.
- Design diverse styles across categories (e.g., heels, sneakers, boots, sandals; totes, crossbodies, clutches, backpacks).
- Develop detailed technical drawings (flats, specs) showing construction, dimensions, stitching, and component placement.
Technical Development & Specification:
- Create comprehensive **Tech Packs**: Detailed documents including specs, construction details, materials, components (zippers, buckles, hardware), colors, measurements, and bill of materials (BOM). This is the blueprint for production.
- Select appropriate materials (leathers, fabrics, synthetics, linings) and components (heels, soles, hardware, trims) considering aesthetics, function, cost, sustainability, and manufacturability.
- Understand footwear lasts and bag patterns.
Prototyping & Fitting:
- Work closely with product development and factories to oversee the creation of prototypes (samples).
- Conduct fittings and evaluate prototypes for design accuracy, fit (especially for shoes), functionality, comfort, construction quality, and durability.
- Provide clear feedback and corrections to factories to refine samples until they meet design and quality standards.
Material & Component Sourcing:
- Research, source, and develop new materials, trims, and hardware in collaboration with suppliers and the sourcing/development team.
- Maintain material libraries and track development.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with Product Development Managers to ensure designs are feasible for production and meet cost targets (FOB).
- Liaise with Merchandising/Planning to align designs with sales forecasts and commercial needs.
- Coordinate with Marketing on product storytelling and presentation.
- Communicate effectively with overseas factories and suppliers.
Presentation:
- Present design concepts, collections, and prototypes to internal stakeholders (Creative Director, Product Managers, Merchandising, Sales) and sometimes external partners/buyers.
Market & Line Awareness:
- Maintain a deep understanding of the brand&aposs overall product assortment and how shoes and bags fit within it.
- Analyze sales data and customer feedback on previous collections to inform future designs.
Were Looking For:
- Education: Bachelor&aposs degree in Fashion Design, Accessory Design, Industrial Design, or a related field. A strong portfolio is paramount, often more important than a specific degree.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Exceptional sketching ability (both hand and digital).
- Mastery of industry-standard design software: Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop (essential), Adobe InDesign. CAD software (e.g., Rhino, Clo 3D) is a major plus.
- In-depth knowledge of footwear and bag construction techniques, pattern making (understanding, not necessarily doing), materials (leather grades, textiles, synthetics), components (hardware, soles, heels), trims, and manufacturing processes.
- Able to travel as and when needed
