Job Description

Job Title: Vice President of Project Management

Location: United States – Remote

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Vice President of Project Management to lead the company's project management organization and provide executive oversight across major projects, programs, and strategic initiatives.

The VP of Project Management will establish effective project management practices, strengthen portfolio governance, improve execution consistency, and ensure critical initiatives remain aligned with business priorities, resources, budgets, and timelines.

This executive will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team, as well as Finance, Operations, Product, Technology, Sales, and other functional leaders, to translate strategic priorities into well-managed programs and measurable business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management Strategy

Develop and maintain the company's project management strategy, operating model, standards, and governance framework. Ensure project management practices support organizational priorities and long-term business objectives.

Project Portfolio Management

Provide executive oversight of the project and program portfolio. Evaluate priorities, dependencies, resource requirements, timelines, and expected business outcomes to maintain appropriate portfolio visibility and alignment.

Program & Project Execution

Oversee the planning and execution of complex, high-priority projects and programs. Ensure project leaders maintain clear objectives, milestones, deliverables, schedules, budgets, and accountability.

Project Governance

Establish consistent governance practices, decision-making processes, stage reviews, documentation standards, and reporting requirements. Provide leadership with reliable visibility into portfolio performance and key decisions.

Strategic Planning

Partner with executive leadership to translate strategic initiatives into actionable project plans. Help define priorities, sequencing, milestones, resource requirements, and performance measures.

Resource & Capacity Planning

Develop effective approaches to resource forecasting, capacity planning, staffing, and allocation. Balance organizational capacity with project demand while identifying potential constraints early.

Risk, Issue & Dependency Management

Establish structured processes for identifying, evaluating, and addressing project risks, issues, assumptions, and dependencies. Ensure significant concerns receive appropriate attention and resolution.

Project Financial Management

Partner with Finance and project leaders to monitor project budgets, forecasts, expenditures, financial assumptions, and business cases. Improve financial visibility across major initiatives.

Project Performance & Reporting

Develop executive-level reporting that provides clear insight into project status, milestones, budgets, resource utilization, risks, dependencies, and expected outcomes.

Process Improvement

Evaluate project management processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, predictability, and execution quality. Establish practical standards that can be applied across teams and business units.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with Product, Technology, Operations, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, and other functions to coordinate initiatives and resolve cross-functional dependencies.

Change & Implementation Management

Provide oversight for organizational and operational initiatives that require coordinated implementation. Ensure project teams have clear plans for communication, training, adoption, and transition.

Project Management Methodology

Develop and continuously improve project management methodologies, templates, tools, standards, and best practices. Support appropriate use of Agile, Waterfall, hybrid, or other delivery approaches based on project requirements.

Technology & Project Systems

Improve the use of project management platforms, portfolio management tools, dashboards, collaboration systems, and reporting solutions. Promote reliable project data and consistent system practices.

Team Leadership & Development

Lead and develop project management leaders and teams. Establish clear expectations, strengthen management capabilities, support professional development, and build a strong leadership pipeline.

Stakeholder Management

Maintain effective relationships with executive sponsors, project stakeholders, functional leaders, and external partners. Ensure important decisions, changes, and project developments are communicated clearly and at the appropriate level.

Executive Partnership

Serve as a trusted project management advisor to executive leadership. Provide practical recommendations regarding project priorities, resource allocation, execution risks, portfolio performance, and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Project Management, Operations, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of progressive project and program management experience.
  • 5+ years of experience leading project management organizations, PMOs, or enterprise-level programs.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing complex, cross-functional projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio management, project governance, resource planning, budgeting, risk management, and performance reporting.
  • Proven ability to establish scalable project management processes and operating standards.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills with experience managing project budgets and forecasts.
  • Excellent executive communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Experience working effectively across multiple business functions and organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with project management, portfolio management, CRM, reporting, or collaboration platforms.
  • Comfortable leading geographically distributed teams in a fully remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading an enterprise PMO or large project management organization.
  • Experience managing portfolios involving multiple business units, products, or technology initiatives.
  • PMP, PgMP, or another recognized project management certification is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid delivery methodologies.
  • Experience implementing project portfolio management systems and executive dashboards.
  • Experience managing strategic transformation, technology implementation, operational improvement, or large-scale business programs.
  • MBA or advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus.
