Job Description
- Serve as a Backend Mentor for the Apple Developer Institute for DevOps.
- Build and maintain reference backend services, APIs, and data models that students can adapt for their projects.
- Guide students in designing and maintainingAPIs and services in a major language (Go, Python, Java, Node.js, or similar), with sound use of databases and attention to application architecture and performance.
- Run hands-on labs, workshops, and challenge-based learning sessions that simulate real production environments (feature delivery, debugging, load handling, incident drills, etc.).
- Introduce students to modern delivery practices - CI/CD pipelines and deploying services to the cloud.
- Help students adopt sound deployment, monitoring, logging, and alerting practices so their services are reliable in production.
- Promote a strong engineering culture within the Academy: collaboration between Backend and DevOps; champion best practices and modern tooling.
- Model clear, structured explanation of complex topics for early-career engineers and students, adapting to different skill levels.
- Work closely with SQE, Apple Developer Institute staff, and other mentors to align content, projects, and assessments with program goals.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a Backend or Software Engineer building and operating production systems, with experience in DevOps.
- Strong backend development expertise: designing and maintaining APIs and services in at least one major language (e.g., Go, Python, Java, Node.js, or similar), with deep knowledge of databases, application architecture, testing, and performance.
- Solid understanding of system design, security, and writing maintainable, well-tested code.
- Working DevOps experience: comfortable with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins) and deploying services to a major cloud provider (AWS or similar).
- Familiarity with Linux, containers (Docker; Kubernetes) and observability tools.
- Ability to explain complex topics in a clear, simple, and structured way to early-career engineers and students.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills; comfortable working with both industry and academic partners.
- Willingness to be on-site at BSD for classes, labs, and student mentoring.
