Job Description

Role Description

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research in physical oceanography focusing on turbulent mixing and internal solitary wave (ISW) variability in the Maritime Continent. The position involves integrating in situ observations, satellite remote sensing (SAR, MODIS, VIIRS, SWOT–KaRIn, and other relevant datasets), and numerical modeling to investigate ocean dynamics and their spatial and temporal variability.

The research will cover two main areas:

  1. Turbulent Mixing in the Maritime Continent: Investigating the variability and mechanisms of turbulent mixing and their implications for vertical nutrient fluxes, marine productivity, fisheries, and marine ecosystem dynamics.
  2. Characterization and Spatiotemporal Variability of Internal Solitary Waves in the Maritime Continent: Characterizing ISW properties, propagation, and variability through the integration of in situ observations, satellite imagery, and numerical modeling, including their implications for ocean dynamics and underwater navigation safety.

The researcher is expected to contribute to scientific publications, collaborative research activities, and the development of integrated observational and modeling approaches to advance understanding of ocean processes in the Maritime Continent.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background: PhD in Physical Oceanography, Oceanography, Environmental Science, Marine Science, or a closely related field.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in physical oceanography, turbulent mixing, internal wave dynamics, satellite remote sensing, numerical modeling, and oceanographic data analysis.
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python for scientific computing, data processing, quantitative analysis, and visualization.
  • Observational and Remote Sensing Data: Familiarity with satellite oceanographic datasets, including SAR, MODIS, and SWOT–KaRIn, as well as in situ oceanographic measurements from instruments such as CTD, ADCP, echosounders, and/or Surface Buoy Profilers (SBP).
  • Data Analysis: Experience in spatiotemporal analysis, time-series analysis, and quantitative characterization of oceanographic processes.
  • Data Integration: Ability to integrate in situ observations, satellite remote sensing, bathymetric data, and numerical model outputs to investigate ocean dynamics and associated physical and biogeochemical processes.
  • Research and Communication: Strong scientific analytical skills, the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary research environments, and a commitment to producing high-quality scientific publications.
