Position: Mechanical (Fabrication & Welding) Engineer – Paper Machine
Position Overview
Responsible for managing, engineering, and supporting fabrication and welding activities related to Paper Machine equipment and mechanical systems. The role ensures the reliability, availability, and integrity of mechanical components through proper fabrication, repair, modification, and improvement activities in accordance with engineering standards, safety requirements, and operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fabrication & Welding Engineering
- Develop and review fabrication and welding work plans for Paper Machine equipment, including structural components, piping, frames, supports, and mechanical parts.
- Provide technical guidance related to welding processes, material selection, welding procedures, and fabrication methods.
- Prepare and review engineering drawings, welding procedures, fabrication sketches, and technical specifications.
- Ensure fabrication activities comply with applicable standards, quality requirements, and safety procedures.
- Support modification, repair, and improvement projects for Paper Machine mechanical equipment.
2. Paper Machine Mechanical Reliability Support
- Provide technical support for mechanical issues related to Paper Machine equipment such as:
- Dryer section components
- Press section equipment
- Wire section components
- Roll assemblies
- Frames and structures
- Piping and mechanical supports
- Rotating equipment interfaces
- Analyze equipment failures related to fabrication defects, welding cracks, deformation, corrosion, and mechanical damage.
- Develop corrective actions and improvement recommendations to prevent recurrence.
3. Maintenance & Shutdown Support
- Support maintenance activities, major shutdowns, and turnaround projects related to fabrication and welding scope.
- Develop work scopes, material requirements, manpower requirements, and execution plans.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams, contractors, and operations teams to ensure safe and effective execution.
- Monitor fabrication quality, welding execution, dimensional accuracy, and installation activities during shutdown.
4. Engineering Improvement & Project Support
- Participate in mechanical improvement projects to enhance Paper Machine reliability, efficiency, and safety.
- Support equipment modification projects including design review, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, life extension, and reliability improvement.
5. Quality Control & Inspection
- Perform inspection and verification of fabrication and welding activities.
- Ensure compliance with welding quality requirements, including:
- Welding procedure qualification
- Welder qualification
- Welding inspection
- Material traceability
- Dimensional inspection
- Coordinate with QA/QC team for non-destructive testing (NDT) activities such as:
- Visual Testing (VT)
- Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
6. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all fabrication and welding activities follow company safety standards and permit-to-work procedures.
- Promote safe working practices during workshop and field execution activities.
- Participate in risk assessment (JSA/HIRA) for fabrication and mechanical work activities.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Experience
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, fabrication, welding, or maintenance engineering within heavy industries.
- Experience in pulp & paper industry, especially Paper Machine maintenance, is highly preferred.
- Experience supporting shutdown, modification, and mechanical improvement projects.
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of welding processes:
- SMAW
- GTAW/TIG
- GMAW/MIG
- FCAW
- Understanding of welding defects, inspection methods, and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of mechanical fabrication processes:
- Cutting
- Machining
- Bending
- Structural fabrication
- Piping fabrication
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and P&ID.
- Knowledge of mechanical materials, metallurgy, corrosion, and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with rotating equipment and Paper Machine components.
- Knowledge of engineering standards (ASME, AWS, API, ISO) is preferred.
