Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced senior tooling engineer to serve as the technical lead for our CNC lathe operations. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of CNC lathe tools, from fixtures and setup to process optimization and product certification. You will ensure our turning centers operate at peak efficiency, producing parts that meet the highest standards of quality, precision, and cost-effectiveness. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who can lead technical projects and mentor junior technicians.

Key Responsibilities

1. CNC Lathe Tooling & Process Leadership:

  • Serve as the primary technical expert for all CNC lathe equipment (e.g., multi-axis, Swiss-type, vertical/horizontal turning centers).
  • Design, specify, procure, and qualify advanced cutting tools, tool holders, and work-holding fixtures (e.g., chucks, collets, custom fixtures).
  • Develop, document, and optimize machining processes, including speeds, feeds, and cutting strategies to maximize tool life and productivity.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex machining issues related to tool wear, surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and cycle time.

2. Equipment Setup & Qualification:

  • Oversee and perform advanced first-time setups for new production runs and complex prototype work on CNC lathes.
  • Collaborate with programming to optimize CNC code for efficient setup and cycle performance.

3. Technical Support & Leadership:

  • Spearhead projects to reduce setup times, improve machine utilization (OEE), and lower cost per part.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies in tooling, equipment, and software.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews for turned components.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of an Associate's Diploma and significant experience.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of hands-on experience as a Tooling Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, or Senior CNC Machinist/Programmer with a strong focus on CNC lathes.
  • Proficient in CNC programming (G-code/M-code) and CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, SolidCAM, GibbsCAM).
  • Proven track record in new product introduction (NPI) and process qualification.
  • Strong proficiency with precision measuring instruments and metrology principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
