About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Lead Software Engineer to take ownership of our software development function and bring structure, quality, and direction to our engineering team. Our team builds and maintains a range of applications like web platforms, internal tools, and automation supporting multiple departments across the company.
This is not a management-only position, and it is not for someone who only talks about how things should be done. We are looking for a leader who leads by building: someone who plans, prioritizes, and mentors, and then opens their editor and ships code alongside the team.
The Opportunity
This is a Player-Coach role with real ownership. You will define the development process, set technical standards, decide how work is prioritized, and stay hands-on in the codebase every week. You will work directly with department stakeholders and management, acting as the technical voice of the engineering team and you will be judged on what the team actually delivers, not on plans and presentations.
Responsibilities
Hands-on Development
- Write, review, and ship production code alongside the team, this is a core part of the role, not an occasional activity
- Take on complex or critical development work yourself, across web, mobile, and automation projects
- Refactor existing applications toward modular, reusable, and maintainable architectures
- Define coding standards, project structure, and shared components across our applications
Team Leadership & Process
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software developers on a day-to-day basis
- Establish a structured development workflow: planning, task tracking, backlog management, and clear prioritization of features, improvements, and bug fixes
- Introduce and enforce engineering practices: code review, version control discipline, testing before release, and documentation
- Define measurable KPIs for the team and report progress to management
- Balance workload across multiple applications and competing requests from different departments
Requirements Management & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Act as the gatekeeper for incoming requests: gather requirements, challenge and clarify them, and brainstorm solutions with stakeholders before implementation begins
- Translate business requests into clear, well-scoped technical specifications
- Push back constructively on requests that are unclear, low-value, or technically unsound, and propose better alternatives
- Manage expectations on timelines and priorities across departments
Technology Direction & AI Adoption
- Evaluate and introduce technologies, tools, and practices that improve how the team builds software
- Lead the practical adoption of AI and LLM-based capabilities where they add real value in our products, internal tools, and the team's own development workflow
- Stay current with developments in software engineering and AI, and decide what is worth adopting and what is hype
Requirements
Engineering Skills
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong full-stack capability and recent, active coding experience
- Solid understanding of application architecture, databases, APIs, and integration between systems
- Experience across more than one type of application (e.g., web, API, automation/scripting, internal tooling)
- Proven ability to design modular, maintainable systems and to refactor legacy codebases
- Experience with Git-based workflows, code review, and testing practices
Leadership & Process
- Experience leading or mentoring developers while remaining hands-on, we will ask about code you have personally shipped recently
- Experience setting up or running a structured development process (Agile/Scrum/Kanban, task tracking tools such as Jira, Trello, or similar)
- Ability to prioritize ruthlessly and say not yet with a clear rationale
- Strong requirements-gathering and stakeholder-management skills
- Comfortable leading a team remotely: proactive written communication, self-management, and keeping work visible through tracking tools and documentation
AI / LLM Awareness
You do not need to be an AI expert, but you should have working knowledge of some of the following and be able to lead the team in this area:
- Large Language Models (LLMs) and their APIs
- Prompt engineering and AI-assisted development tools
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents, or workflow automation with AI
Communication
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken (mandatory), comfortable writing documentation and communicating with stakeholders in English
- Able to explain technical decisions clearly to non-technical audiences
What We Look For
We value demonstrated capability over credentials and titles. You might come from a background in full-stack development, technical leadership at a startup, software architecture, or product engineering. Most importantly, you should be a builder who brings order to chaos, you see a messy, reactive workflow and instinctively want to structure it by rolling up your sleeves, not by writing memos. If your recent experience is purely managing people without touching code, this role is not the right fit.
Nice to Have
- Experience maintaining multiple applications in parallel
- Experience shipping AI/LLM-powered features to production
- CI/CD and deployment automation experience
- Experience defining engineering KPIs and reporting to management
Why Join Us
- Real ownership: you define the process, the standards, and the technical direction of the engineering team
- Direct access to management and department stakeholders, your decisions have immediate, visible impact
- A clear mandate for change: leadership knows the current workflow needs structure and is hiring you to fix it
- Variety of work across web, API, automation, and AI, you will never be stuck maintaining a single product.
- Fully remote, work from anywhere
Application Requirements
- CV / Resume (in English)
- GitHub profile or portfolio of relevant projects (if available)
- A brief description of a team, process, or system you improved, what was broken, what you changed, and the result.
