Our client is seeking a high-performing, commercially sharp
Coal Trader / Marketing Executive to join a premier Indonesian resources and trading conglomerate. The successful candidate will drive end-to-end physical coal trading strategies, expand domestic and export market share, manage complex contract negotiations, and optimize supply chain economics across Indonesian coal specs (GAR/NAR).
This role demands strong off-taker networks, acute coal market intelligence, and hands-on operational capability from mine mouth to vessel laycan.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commercial Strategy & Deal Origination
- Lead originate, structure, and execute physical coal trading transactions across domestic (PLN, industrial IPPs, smelters) and international export markets (China, India, SEA, East Asia).
- Secure off-take agreements from third-party mines and optimize coal sourcing portfolios.
- Analyze market dynamics, ICI/Newcastle indices, freight rates, and price spreads to maximize trading margins and capitalize on arbitrage opportunities.
2. Client Portfolio & Contract Management
- Build and maintain direct executive-level relationships with end-users, power plants, trading houses, and shipping partners.
- Draft, negotiate, and finalize commercial sales & purchase agreements (SPA), including pricing terms (FOB/CFR/CIF), specs penalty structures, and laytime/demurrage terms.
- Collaborate with QA/QC teams to manage coal specifications (CV, Total Moisture, Ash, Sulfur) matching client burn specs.
3. Risk Management & Operations Supervision
- Implement strict credit risk and counterparty risk controls in coordination with the finance team (Letters of Credit, Telegraphic Transfers, Escrow arrangements).
- Oversee barge loading, transshipment, vessel nomination, and laycan schedules to ensure smooth operational execution and minimize demurrage risks.
- Monitor compliance with Indonesian mining regulations, domestic market obligations (DMO), and RKAB production/trading quotas.
Qualifications & Key Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering, Business Administration, Supply Chain, International Trade, or Finance.
- Experience: Minimum 15 years of proven track record in physical coal trading/marketing within Indonesia, ideally with experience handling both domestic IPP/Industrial accounts and export off-takers.
- Network: Established network with mine owners, end-users, vessel owners/brokers, and surveyors across Indonesia and regional export destinations.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Indonesian coal specifications (GAR 3000 – 5800), ICI indexing mechanisms, INCOTERMS, and shipping laytime mechanics.
- Languages: Fluent in English and Bahasa Indonesia. (Proficiency in Mandarin is an added advantage for regional trading desks).
