About the Role

We are looking for a CAD Automation Engineer to develop software that automates the interpretation and transformation of architectural CAD drawings.

The primary goal of this role is to automate a process that is currently performed manually: analyzing building drawings, identifying the building envelope and exterior surfaces, and generating accurate geometric representations such as unfolded elevation or envelope drawings.

This role sits at the intersection of CAD, computational geometry, and software engineering. You will be responsible not only for understanding architectural drawings, but also for translating geometric rules and domain knowledge into reliable software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software to read, interpret, and process CAD drawings.
  • Identify and extract building envelopes, exterior surfaces, and relevant geometric information from architectural drawings.
  • Automate the generation of unfolded building envelope or exterior surface drawings.
  • Design algorithms for geometric transformation, surface extraction, and coordinate conversion.
  • Convert manual CAD workflows into repeatable and scalable software processes.
  • Build validation mechanisms to ensure geometric and dimensional accuracy.
  • Handle variations and inconsistencies across different CAD drawings and drawing standards.
  • Integrate CAD automation components into larger software systems and workflows.
  • Collaborate with engineers and domain experts to translate architectural requirements into software logic.
  • Continuously improve the accuracy, reliability, and performance of the automation pipeline.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong software engineering skills in at least one programming language such as Python, C#, or C++.
  • Experience working with CAD systems, CAD files, or CAD APIs.
  • Strong understanding of 2D/3D geometry and coordinate systems.
  • Ability to design and implement algorithms for geometric processing and transformation.
  • Experience programmatically manipulating lines, curves, polygons, surfaces, or meshes.
  • Ability to understand architectural or engineering drawings and translate them into computational rules.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, especially when dealing with incomplete or inconsistent geometric data.
  • Experience with Git or other version control systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD API, Rhino, RhinoCommon, Grasshopper, or similar CAD/geometry platforms.
  • Experience developing Grasshopper components, Rhino plugins, AutoCAD plugins, or other CAD automation tools.
  • Experience with computational geometry libraries or geometry-processing frameworks.
  • Experience working with DXF, DWG, IFC, BIM, or other architectural/engineering data formats.
  • Knowledge of building envelopes, façades, elevations, or architectural geometry.
  • Experience automating workflows previously performed manually by CAD operators.
  • Experience developing production-grade software around CAD or engineering workflows.

What Success Looks Like

You will build a system that can take architectural CAD drawings as input and accurately reproduce geometric work that previously required manual CAD operation. The most important measure of success is accuracy and reliability: the generated building envelope geometry should correctly represent the original drawings while significantly reducing manual work.
